MATERIAL INFORMATION

We can supply LiF crystal substrates in all common sizes up to a maximum diameter of 60mm (depending on orientation). Please get in touch here if you require another size.

  • Name: Lithium Fluoride, LiF wafers
  • Lattice parameter:a=2.008 Å (2a = 4.016Å)
  • Crystal Structure: Cubic, Rocksalt
  • Commonly used as substrate for: Perpvskites (BaTiO3, PZT, MgO, UO2,
  • Surface Roughness: Ra 1 nm (measured 5x5 µm AFM scan)
  • Available Dimensions: 5x5 mm to 20x20 mm and customized
  • Single or double side polished
  • Cut to order 3 weeks
  • Excellent optical properties, high transmittance in the deep ultraviolet region (120nm - 400nm up to Infrared 6.0μm
  • LiF is toxic if swallowed, & an irritant to skin and eyes

Lithium Fluoride (LiF) belongs to the cubic system, and can be cleaved along (100) plane and less commonly (110) plane. LiF has some of the best optical properties, especially in the deep ultraviolet range. Lithium fluoride crystal transmissibility scope from ultraviolet 105nm to infrared 6.0μm. Therefore LiF are commonly used to produce UV - visible - IR field optical window, lenses, prisms and refraction components.

LiF and temperature:

Compared to the other single crystals available, LiF has a relatively low melting point: 855°C.  LiF softens at 600°C and becomes slightly plastic. It is therefore recommended to keep substrate temperature under 600C. LiF also sensitive to thermal shock and can be attacked by atmospheric moisture above 400°C. Under vacuum (e.g. before thin film deposition this should not be an issue however is worth noting in case of any other annealing processes that may be performed. Lastly, LiF suffers from thermal shock therefore LiF should not be exposed to sudden changes in temperature on heating/cooling (before/after deposition).
